Do You Brush Your Teeth TOO Hard?

If you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time, as well as floss, you’re doing great! However, it’s really important to be careful in terms of how hard you brush. If you’re too aggressive, it’s not going to clean your teeth “better”. Instead, it can cause problems such as:

  • Wear and tear on your enamel, which doesn’t regenerate
  • Receding gum line, which can lead to exposed roots = increased sensitivity
  • Greater risk of cavities

A friendly reminder of how to properly brush your teeth:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • If you use an electric toothbrush, refrain from pressing it hard against your teeth and gums
  • Hold your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle
  • Use short, tooth-wide strokes
  • Don’t push down on your gums (yes, your bristles will touch your gums, but that’s different than pushing down on them with a lot of pressure)

When you go for your next 6-month dental checkup, your dentist will be able to tell if you are brushing well or if you need to make some changes. Be sure to ask them about any concerns you may have.
