What are dentures?

Dentures are removable artificial replacements for your teeth and gums to replace lost or removed natural teeth. Dentures can either be full or partial. Full dentures replace all of the teeth on your top or bottom gum line. Partial dentures replace a few (when you don’t need all of your teeth replaced.) They are custom designed to fit your mouth and if you have a partial denture or a full denture only on the top or the bottom, they are made to match your existing teeth.

What are dentures made out of?

Today’s dentures are made of hard resin. They are more fragile than natural teeth, meaning they could crack or break if dropped or poorly cared for. Ideally, they are replaced every 5 years or so.

The structure that supports the dentures (the part that holds the artificial teeth in place) is often made from a similar resin as used for the teeth or a more flexible polymer material. This part is made to fit snugly on your natural gum line.

Partial dentures are fastened to natural teeth to prevent them from slipping out of place and fitted to the part of the gum line that they will sit on.

Full and partial dentures can easily be taken out for cleaning and while sleeping.

Why wear dentures?

  • Dentures improve the appearance of a smile
  • Dentures keep the structure of the mouth sound by supporting the structures around the cheeks and lips.
  • Dentures make it possible to eat foods that require chewing
