Finishing your Invisalign treatment is an exciting time. You’ve worn them approx. 22 hours per day for the required number of months. Now what?
Well, you definitely don’t want all of that time and energy going to waste (not to mention your investment)…so you have to be diligent with the aftercare too. 
- You will receive a plastic retainer to wear for a required number of months (just like you did with your Invisalign aligners – 22 hours per day).
- You may be able to request a wire retainer for your bottom teeth. (The wire retainer makes it very low maintenance – you won’t even know it’s there soon after having it installed. You will just have to be sure to clean well behind the wire.)
- After the required number of months has passed (once your teeth have stabilized), you will only have to wear your plastic retainer at night.
What happens if I don’t wear the retainer as instructed?
If you don’t wear the retainer as instructed by your dentist, you run the risk of your teeth slowly shifting back to their original position. So if you still want to ask “Do I really have to wear my retainer?” The answer is: “As long as you don’t want your teeth to move.”
